Niigata Prefecture's coffee scene might not make international headlines, but it has been building into something impressive. That comes into focus with the upcoming Coffee and Snack Festival, a two-day event taking place in Mitsuke City in mid-June.

Held at the Navel Mitsuke Community Exchange Center, this is the first time the city has hosted a dedicated coffee and sweets festival. The best part is how accessible it is: admission is free (just bring yen for your snacks and drinks), and the format is designed for easy weekend wandering rather than structured tasting sessions.

Across the event, 20 businesses from around Niigata Prefecture will gather in one place. The lineup includes 7 coffee shops, 3 beverage vendors, and 10 food stalls, ranging from small local roasters to dessert specialists and food trucks. Expect everything from deep, locally roasted blends and Vietnamese-style coffee to donuts made with regional ingredients, bubble waffles, crepes, bagels, and soft serve ice cream.

What stands out here is how regional Japan continues to build strong, hyper-local food cultures outside of Tokyo. Niigata in particular has developed a surprisingly diverse coffee ecosystem, with roasters and cafes spread across cities like Nagaoka, Sanjo, Kashiwazaki, and Niigata City itself. Events like this bring those usually scattered specialty shops into one shared space.

Getting there

The Navel Mitsuke Community Exchange Center is located around five minutes by car (or 20 minutes on foot) from Mitsuke Station, which is served by the Shinetsu Main Line.
