Bokushi Dori in Shiozawa

The revived post town in the early summer season

For Tanabata (the Star Festival, July 7th), bamboo branches were decorated with wishes written on strips of paper

The eaves are necessary in this snow country during the winter, but they also play the role of sun shades during the summer

Some shops have their own old styled signboard; this is a sewing machine indicating a clothing store

Huge sukari hanging from the side of a gate - they were used to walk in the heavy snow

These red parasols with benches are there for you to sit and rest

This shop with the pretty flower motif is a great place for candles and fragrance lovers

Viewing the moon was always more enjoyable through round windows

If I were to do a sketch of a building, this shop would be my choice

A small alley way that might remind you of ninjas

The soba they serve in this restaurant is extremely fresh; they make their noodles right in front of the customers

Japanese maples are planted along the street

Feeling as if I had stepped back in time, I found myself fascinated by the peaceful atmosphere of Edo period (1603–1868) styled houses of Bokushi Dori. This major street in southern Niigata is lined with old-fashioned buildings, and the calm mood of a Japanese post town lined with inns and travelers still remains. Located in an area of Japan famous for snow, it’s a very comfortable resort spot during the summer with cool, dry breezes. If you are tired by the heat and busyness of the city during summertime, this is the place to be.

Love this place, it's such a nice area to walk around!

With maple trees lining the streets, this place must be especially beautiful in the fall. No visible power lines makes a huge difference, as well.
