Taking in the hot spring baths and a meal at a traditional Japanese hotel in Akiu can be a great experience. Some hotels in this area offer one day trip plans. You don't need to bring towels, soap, shampoo or lotion. You can enjoy different style baths before and after having a delicious meal. One of the hotels, Hotel Sakan ('Densyo no yado Sakan') offer three types of plans at the price of about 5,000 yen. All bathrooms have big windows and the outdoor baths are surrounded by trees. You can enjoy the scenery as you soak in the hot springs. Also, why don't you walking along Rairai gorge near the hotel? You will feel relaxed walking the esplanade along Rairai gorge.

I agree! The hot springs here are gorgeous. We visited the baths at Hotel Kiyo Mizu (ホテルきよ水) as a day trip. It wasn't too expensive (around ¥2000-3000 from memory) and they had a large indoor bath and a gorgeous outdoor bath with rocks and a little cave. I really recommend Akiu!
My friends and I did a day trip combining Akiu Great Falls (Akiu Otaki), a traditional restaurant and the onsen baths. If you'd like to see more of our trip, please feel free to check out my YouTube video here:
