In the northern Kyoto region, Mt. Oe, Fukuchiyama City, is famous for its unkai, or “Sea of Clouds”. Mt. Oe is out of the way and it may be difficult to see the Sea of Clouds there. However, in Maizuru City you can also see the Sea of Clouds from Gorogatake. It truly is an awesome experience if you have never seen anything like it before. The Sea of Clouds really looks like the ocean. You will need a car or you can walk along the road to the top. The best viewing times are just after sunrise in Autumn or late winter.

Gorogatake Sea of Clouds
The sea above the sea

Just before the sunrise.
Underneath these clouds is Maizuru Bay.
Sometimes it can be very windy and or cold.
The wind really starts to pick up. Soon after this I was engulfed in clouds.
There was a break. Looking towards Miyazu.
Looking over Nishi Maizuru harbor.
Looking at Maki-yama. You can hang glide from here and fly above Kanzaki, Maizuru and Yura, Miyazu.
Maki-yama again. This would be the last time I would see it. After this shot I was engulfed again.

Yeah! I woke up at around 4am and was at the top at about 5:40am. I plan on trying again this autumn.

I guess you woke up really early and climbed to the top of the mountain. I presume you don't regret doing it because of the great photos.
